LEARNING MORE ABOUT AUTISM
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF AUTISM?
The symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) vary widely but typically include difficulties with social communication, sensory sensitivities, and repetitive behaviors. Individuals may struggle with understanding social cues, making eye contact, or engaging in reciprocal conversations. Sensory sensitivities can cause discomfort with sounds, textures, or lights, while rigid routines and intense special interests are common characteristics. Some individuals with autism also experience co-occurring conditions like ADHD or anxiety, further influencing daily functioning.
HOW DO YOU TEST FOR AUTISM?
A proper Autism assessment includes a multi-method approach to ensure accuracy. At Rock Springs Psychological Testing Center, we gather input from the client and key observers, such as parents, teachers, or spouses, to assess social interactions, communication abilities, and behavioral patterns. Additionally, we utilize performance-based measures to evaluate social cognition, executive functioning, and sensory processing. This comprehensive approach ensures a thorough and accurate Autism diagnosis, allowing for individualized recommendations and treatment planning.
ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF AUTISM?
The DSM-5 classifies Autism Spectrum Disorder into three severity levels (Level 1, 2, and 3) based on the level of support an individual requires. Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder (SPCD) is a related condition characterized by difficulties with verbal and nonverbal communication but without the restrictive behaviors seen in ASD. While many in the autism community discuss and research terms like Demand Avoidance, Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), and AuDHD (Autism and ADHD combined), these are not formally recognized diagnoses. However, at Rock Springs Psychological Testing Center, we ensure that our treatment recommendations and accommodations are tailored to each individual’s specific needs and challenges which could align with PDA or AuDHD.
HOW DO YOU TREAT AUTISM?
Autism treatment is highly individualized and focuses on improving communication, social skills, and daily functioning. Effective interventions may include Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), speech therapy, occupational therapy, and executive functioning coaching. Many individuals benefit from sensory integration techniques, social skills training, and structured routines. While there is no single treatment for ASD, our comprehensive psychological evaluations provide personalized recommendations to help individuals and families access the most effective therapies, accommodations, and support services.
