LEARNING DISORDERS
Specific Learning Disorders
Learning Disorders are neurodevelopmental conditions that affect a person's ability to read, write, or perform mathematical calculations, despite normal intelligence and effort. These challenges can impact academic achievement, self-esteem, and career opportunities. At Rock Springs Psychological Testing Center, we provide comprehensive learning disorder assessments to accurately diagnose learning difficulties and guide effective educational accommodations and interventions.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A LEARNING DISORDER?
The symptoms of a learning disorder vary but often include difficulty with reading comprehension, written expression, spelling, or math problem-solving. Individuals may struggle with processing information efficiently, following multi-step directions, or retaining new academic concepts. These challenges can lead to frustration, low self-confidence, and avoidance of schoolwork. While some students work harder to compensate, their difficulties often persist without proper diagnosis and intervention.
HOW DO YOU TEST FOR LEARNING DISORDERS?
A comprehensive learning disorder assessment includes a thorough evaluation of a client’s academic skills, cognitive abilities, and processing strengths and weaknesses. At Rock Springs Psychological Testing Center, we compare a client’s academic performance to expected levels for their age and peers to determine if a significant learning difficulty exists. Unlike the outdated discrepancy model, which solely compares IQ and academic performance, we use a modern, research-based approach to ensure accurate diagnoses and meaningful recommendations.
ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEARNING DISORDER?
The DSM-5 recognizes three types of Specific Learning Disorder (SLD):
-
SLD with Impairment in Reading – Often associated with dyslexia, this condition affects reading fluency, comprehension, and decoding skills.
-
SLD with Impairment in Written Expression – Similar to dysgraphia, this condition impacts spelling, grammar, handwriting, and the ability to organize thoughts in writing.
-
SLD with Impairment in Mathematics – Related to dyscalculia, this disorder affects number sense, problem-solving, and understanding math concepts.
While terms like dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia are commonly used, they are not official medical diagnoses. At Rock Springs Psychological Testing Center, we diagnose learning disorders using DSM-5 criteria while ensuring that treatment recommendations and accommodations address each individual's specific challenges.
HOW DO YOU TREAT LEARNING DISORDERS?
Treatment for learning disorders focuses on targeted interventions, academic accommodations, and specialized support. Effective strategies include multisensory reading programs for dyslexia, structured writing exercises for dysgraphia, and hands-on math instruction for dyscalculia. Many individuals benefit from educational therapy, assistive technology, and classroom accommodations such as extra time on tests or modified assignments. At Rock Springs Psychological Testing Center, we provide personalized recommendations to help individuals succeed in school, work, and daily life.
